Numerous social and cultural indicators suggest that the social status of science in South Korea has declined significantly over the past several decades. This decline can be partially explained by the two-culture model of public understanding of science, which posits that the transition from an industrializing to a post-industrial society is accompanied by a shift from a culture of idealized science to a culture of skepticism. Using data from a national survey in South Korea, this study provides micro-level evidence supporting the two-culture model. As predicted, older individuals perceived science as having made greater contributions, suggesting that they held more idealized views of science than younger individuals. The perceived importance of economic development, scientific knowledge, ideology, uncertainty regarding scientific risks, and formal education mediated the relationship between age and perceptions of science’s contributions. This suggests that these mediators may function as causal mechanisms explaining why citizens in post-industrial societies tend to have more skeptical views of science than those in industrializing countries.
