[ 강의 소개 ]
The concept of the public sphere is one of the foundational underpinnings of Western modernity. It appears in numerous theoretical frameworks that describe, critique, and anticipate democratic practices—including civic participation, the formation of collective will, and the emergence of alternative imaginaries.

This seminar will engage with a range of critical and theoretical literature on the public sphere, enabling students to become familiar with this essential construct in communication, media, and political theory. Over two weeks, we will explore key questions raised in the scholarship on the public sphere. For example, what makes a public efficacious? What does it mean—historically, theoretically, and ethically—to apply public sphere theories? What is included in or excluded from the public sphere? How have various concepts (e.g., publics, publicity, counterpublics, and public modalities) challenged or modified the idea of the public sphere? What contributions does communication scholarship make to our understanding of the public sphere?

The seminar will start with canonical theories of the public sphere (including the works of Jürgen Habermas, John Dewey, and Hannah Arendt) and counterpublics (such as contributions from Michael Warner, Catherine Squires, and Nancy Fraser), then move on to recent questions and discussions.
