In this session, Dr. Robin Stevens will introduce the Youth Communication Action Research (YCAR) framework—a practical guide for communication scholars employing participatory methods in their research. Drawing from her recent collaboration with Instagram, Dr. Stevens will present findings from a study focused on teen safety and wellbeing on the platform. Using youth participatory co-design methods, the research assessed both positive youth development outcomes and tangible changes implemented within Instagram. The lecture will also explore the complexities of conducting research in partnership with community and industry stakeholders, highlighting key challenges, opportunities, and lessons learned from cross-sector collaboration.

BIO: Robin Stevens, PhD, MPH, Associate Professor, Associate Dean for Research

Robin Stevens, PhD, MPH is a health communication scholar focused on achieving health equity in African American and Latinx communities in the United States. She has pioneered digital epidemiological methods to investigate sexual health, mental health, and substance use in the context of the digital neighborhood. She uses interdisciplinary community-engaged approaches to improve the health and well-being of youth of color leveraging digital technologies. More recently, her work has focused on youth driven research translation for science communication, tobacco use and sexual health. Her work has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Dr. Stevens is an Associate Professor of Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication, USC and the Director of the Health Equity & Media Lab. She received her AB from Harvard College, MPH from University of Michigan, and PhD from the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania.
